Willimantic – George Michael Gorey, 83, passed away August 9, 2026, at Northern Light Mayo Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born February 19, 1943, in Hamlin Plantation, the son of Vincent and Anne (Cyr) Gorey. After graduating from Edward Little High School in Auburn, George entered the Army and became a machinist where he developed his love for the field of mechanics. Upon discharge he worked for his uncle’s construction business in Monmouth where he learned about running a business. He met and married Jackie in 1965 and together they raised their seven children in Willimantic, Maine. George is remembered fondly by many as the proprietor of the Monson Gulf Station where everyone knew that if you needed a tow or wanted an antique car painted, he was the man for the job. George obtained a boilers license, a CDL and bus driver’s license and enjoyed working in various positions that supported his community until he had a stroke and retired. Somewhere along the way George learned baling twine, duct tape and WD-40 could fix a multitude of things, that when you fixed peanut butter crackers to snack on, you needed to fix a couple extras for the dog, and to play checkers extremely well! George was a kind man, loving husband, brother, son, father, uncle and Grampy. George is survived by his loving wife, Jacquelyn (Turner) Gorey; seven children, Richard Austin and his wife, Mona, Rex Austin and his wife, Lynn, Roxanne Austin and her husband, Bryan, Randolph Austin and his wife, Monica, Rene Gorey, Nathan Gorey and his wife, Meyvi, and Rosalie Morin and her husband, Jeff; two brothers, Francis Gorey and his wife, Louise, and Roy Gorey and his wife, Cindy; two sisters, Gloria Croteau and Susie Hiscock and husband, Frank, sister-in-law, Doris; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, David Gorey; and sister, Bernadette Bellefleur and her husband, Ron. A graveside committal with military honors will be held Saturday, August 22 at 1pm at the Riverside Cemetery in Willimantic followed by light refreshments at the Willimantic Town Hall.
