Obituary of Henry A. Flagg
Sangerville - Henry Alfonzo Flagg, 84, passed away on September 10, 2021. Henry was born on September 24, 1936, in Dexter. He was the son of Wyman and Bessie (Packard) Flagg. Henry attended school in Corinna where he graduated from Corinna Union Academy in 1955. After graduation, he moved to Massachusetts where he attended night school to be an automotive mechanic while apprenticing at Pettengil Motor Sales for three years. Henry was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1959 and spent 3 years in Germany. In 1963 he married Carol Ernestine Starbird and settled in South Sangerville in a home he built with the help of his father, father-in-law, friends, and neighbors. Henry worked at Labun Chevrolet in Dexter as a mechanic for many years before deciding to open Flagg's Small Engine Service in the basement of his home. Eventually, he and his best friend, Bradley Nuite, built a shop that would house Flagg's Small Engine and Radiator Repair for a great many years. A new venture came along when he purchased a cedar shingle machine and built another structure to house a cedar shingle mill. His final job before retirement in 2001 was with A.E. Robinson Oil Company. He worked with sheet metal, serviced furnaces and also small engine repair. Henry was a man who could do just about anything and would help anyone at the drop of a hat if he was able.
Henry was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Dexter and Guilford. He was also a member of the Piscataquis Pomona and the South Sangerville Grange where he held the office of Master for 22 years.
Henry had many hobbies, including reading, vegetable gardening and driving his beloved 1936 Oldsmobile to many parades around the area over the years. Beekeeping was something he came to discover and take great pleasure in after his retirement.
He is survived by his wife and two children, Scott and wife, Barbara Flagg, and Shannon and husband, Darrell Spaulding, all of Sangerville; three grandchildren, Shannon Flagg of Machias, Danielle Spaulding of Waterville, and Brandon and wife, Karissa Spaulding, of Palmyra; two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Cayson Spaulding; sister, Helen “Kitty” and husband, Ed Vandenburgh, of Corinna, and three nephews, Sanger, Randy and Daniel Davis. Henry was predeceased by his parents; grandson, Christopher A. Flagg; his aunt, June Warren; and uncle, Harold “Bud” Packard.
A graveside committal service for family will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2021, at the Bailey Cemetery in South Sangerville with Pastor Marilyn Rohdin officiating. There will be a gathering at the South Sangerville Grange Hall at noon for family and friends after the committal service to share stories and memories.
