Obituary of Jeanne A. Smith

Sebec Village - Jeanne A. Smith, 88, passed away surrounded by loved ones on November 2, 2021. Jeanne was born on April 17, 1933, to Joseph “Leo” La Pointe and Leona (Goudreau) La Pointe in Seaside, New Brunswick, Canada. She was the third born of four children and the youngest daughter. The family moved to Sebec, Maine in 1936. Although born during the Great Depression, Jeanne was always described by her family as the happy child. As an adult, she loved to tell the stories of her childhood: walking a mile to the store to sell an egg for penny candy, swimming in the river, and playing with her brother and sisters. Also, she loved to sing. Jeanne and her sisters would entertain at the grange hall or for local school events. She attended schools in Sebec and Dover-Foxcroft. While living in Dover-Foxcroft she met Harold Smith. They were wed on February 12, 1949, and were married for nearly 59 years before Harold’s passing. They had 5 children, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Jeanne was loving and nurturing. She always made sure through the decades our house was the family go to place for Sunday and holiday dinners for her children, then her grandchildren, and later to include her great grandchildren. Other extended family members were frequently included. Jeanne was predeceased by her father and her mother; her husband, Harold; her sister, Evangeline Burnett; her brother, Larry; her daughter, Angela; and her granddaughter, Jennifer. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Perkins; her children, Alan and Deborah Smith, Holly Smith, Linda and Scott Mountford, and Cherie Smith; her grandchildren, Suzanne and David McElvain, Samantha and Jason Greenlaw, Garrett Smith and Taylor Dow, and Andrea Mountford; her great grandchildren, Catherine McElvain, David McElvain II, Lucas Greenlaw, Emily Greenlaw, Ella Smith, and Lylla Smith; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sebec Village Reading Room on November 14, 2021 at 1:00 pm.
