Obituary of Cathryn B. Knox
Milo - Cathryn Bradeen Knox, age 76, passed away on November 2, 2021, in the presence of her family after a valiant battle with PSP. Cathryn, the daughter of Joseph and Edna Lyford Bradeen, was born October 4, 1945 in Milo, Maine. She was a 1963 graduate of Milo High School.
Cathryn spent her early adult years as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, and later paused her career to raise her three children. When she re-entered the workforce, she became director of training and education for the Family Planning Association of Maine from 1980-1991. She did pioneering work in teen-aged pregnancy, birth control, health, and HIV education, and was passionate about advocating for diverse viewpoints in this arena, including people with disabilities and the LGBTQ community.
Cathryn received a B.S. degree from Farmington State Teachers’ College, as well as a B.S. and Master of Education from the University of Maine in Orono. She was principal at Maranacook Community School in Readfield, ME from 1993-1998. She wrote a grant that helped establish a health center at the school, which served the high school, middle school, and alternative school. From 1998-2006 she served as principal of Orono High School and in 2006, she returned to her hometown and served as principal at Milo Elementary School until her retirement in 2010.
In addition to her ardent love of reading and caring for animals, Cathryn was a member of many groups during her years in education, including the Maine Principals’ Association and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. After retirement, she joined the Penobscot Valley Senior College, the Maine Girls’ Collaborative Project, Milo Garden Club, Maine Association of Retirees, and the Milo Book Club. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Brownville Junction.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Knox and wife, Peggy of Seal Harbor, ME; daughter, Katie Knox Sheldon and husband, John of Berwick, ME; two granddaughters, Sarah Knox and Kimmy Thurlow-Sheldon; brother, Paul Bradeen and wife Gwen of Milo, ME; and sister, Joyce Bradeen Philbrick of Hampden, ME. She was a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews, well-known for her thrilling car rides and robust laughter spurred by a variety of crazy antics. She also had a legion of loyal and loving friends who enjoyed her numerous road trips and shopping adventures while she was well, and who gave her much comfort and companionship in her later years. She was predeceased by her parents and a son, Andrew Stephen Knox, at age 4.
The family would like to thank the staff at Westgate Rehabilitation Center and her caretaker, Cindy Goodwin, for their love and care of Cathryn. She loved you all like family.
