Milo, ME—Nancy Anne (Dubè) Oakes, 83, died May 2, 2022, at Mayo Regional Hospital. She was born July 12, 1938, in Old Town, the daughter of Gerard and Juliette (Jamm) Dubè. Nancy graduated from Old Town High School in 1956, where she was a star pitcher on the softball team and where she met the love of her life and future husband, Walter “Eddie” Oakes. Nancy and Eddie were married on April 18, 1959, and have been constantly by one another’s side for the past 63 years. Together they raised a loving family and created a large community of friends while living in Milo these past sixty years. Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her life. Nancy loved nothing more than playing cards and games with family and friends, outings with her sisters, and sharing s’mores by the fire at camp at Schoodic Lake. A lifelong athlete, she enjoyed participating in sports including bowling, volleyball, kayaking, snorkeling, and cross-country skiing. She was a pillar of her church community, where she served as a sacristan and extraordinary minister. Her devotion to her church led her to provide housekeeping for the church rectory in Brownville Junction. Nancy’s family and friends knew her as a “jill-of-all-trades”. Her specialties included but were not limited to wallpapering, painting, carpentry, and baking Christmas cookies, peanut butter fudge and her amazing blueberry cake. She waitressed at Delaite’s Restaurant where she made many friends. Nancy’s nieces, nephews, and friends of her children thought of her as a second mother. She was a caring and selfless person, who often quietly helped those in need in the community—without anyone knowing or calling attention to herself. Nancy was dearly loved by her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, brother, nieces, nephews, and friends and will be deeply missed. Nancy is survived by her husband of 63 years, Walter E. Oakes Jr.; daughter, Janet Smith and her husband, Jim, of Industry; son, Don Oakes and his wife, Valerie, of Falmouth; daughter, Karen Thurston and her husband, Glen, of Rumford; daughter, Joanna Deetjen and her husband, John, of Newport; along with eight grandchildren: Matthew Oakes and his wife, Morgan; Logan White; Jay Smith and his partner, Johanna Heeren; Casey Oakes; Ethan White; Shane Smith and his wife, Sacha; Lauren Dighton and her husband, Joe; and Christina Oakes; as well as two great grandsons: Cameron White and Myles Dighton; her brother Francis Dubay and his wife, Anne; along with her brother-in-law, Wayne Therrien . In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her four sisters, Rose Simpkins, Joan Cote, Beverly Therrien, and Dorothy Landry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 12, 2022, at St. Francis/St. Paul Parish, 128 Riverside Dr. Milo, with Fr. Emile Dubè, celebrant. The family invites relatives and friends to share memories and refreshments at the Three Rivers Kiwanis Building 15 Harris Pond Rd, Milo immediately after the service.
