Dover-Foxcroft - Evelyn Edith Cookson (Witherly), 86, passed away peacefully at Stillwater Healthcare in Bangor, Maine, on November 19, 2022, with her loving family at her side. She was one of ten children born to Margaret and Clinton Mitchell (East Dover, Maine) and was the last surviving sibling. Evelyn found great pride in her family and prepared them for the world by instilling her values of independence, determination, a strong work ethic, a sense of adventure and the ability to overcome any challenge. Evelyn not only supported her children financially, but also by becoming actively involved in the many activities they undertook. She never hesitated to jump in to plan, organize, cook, chaperone—whatever was needed, or whatever she saw needed doing. Evelyn tirelessly pursued her interests including growing flower gardens in her yard, ballroom dancing, sewing, crafting, cooking/baking, and helping others. She created numerous businesses that served her and her community including a pet shop, child care, cake decorating classes, wedding cake creation, & house cleaning. She traveled around the US and to the UK & Japan bringing back inspiration from each. She was a physical powerhouse and pursued sports with vigor, alone and in clubs, including walking, jogging, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and especially bicycling. She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Evelyn is survived by six children: Margaret (Peggy) Seale (Witherly), Rita Witherly, Fred Witherly, Bill Mitchell, Lyla Cookson, & Lyle J. Cookson, eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces & nephews and one sister-in-law, Dianne Mitchell. The burial will be held at 11am on Thursday, December 1st at the Dover Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
