When Les and Helen began coming to my home to teach my then boyfriend Jeff Porter about the Bible, I was less than pleased. However, since their study was in progress when I came home from work, I couldn’t help but overhear their discussions and sometimes I would comment or ask a question. Helen, of course, would always invite me to join the study but I would refuse. I began to sit in occasionally and eventually it became a regular study for me too. They were so patient and kind, but also thorough and firm. We made slow but steady progress but we ended up having separate studies. When they decided to move to France we were sad to see them go, but Les and Helen made sure that we each had a list of what we needed to do to progress to baptism, and those lists were long! They lovingly made sure that we each had a willing teacher to take their place, and off they went. After Jeff and I were married, we had a chance to travel to Europe and were able to spend a few days with them in their home. It was a wonderful visit and despite being ill, Helen was still zealously preaching and Les remained active in the ministry and with their congregation. What a witness they both gave! We are so thankful to have been a part of their lives and for the opportunity to see them again when all things are made new.

The phone rang as I was entering my home from work. I listened as my mother shared her daily activities. I was anxious to get off the phone, but then she ended by saying "Leslie Wright died." An overwhelming sadness came over me that I have yet to shake. I so remember Leslie.. I loved to see him laugh, see him look at his wife as she spoke and to speak kindly to all in his company. A strong silent brother, he would watch closely, pay attention and smile.
I had the privilege of being able to record Helene's memorial talk as it was live streamed from France to the Sharon Kingdom Hall. For some reason, he wasn't able to get a copy of the talk. I was so happy that I could send the talk to him. Now 5 years later.. he is gone. Alive in JEHOVAH'S memory, we are eager to see him and Helene again.. I will miss your cooking posts along with your choice of wine, as well as your encouragement.

Dearest Wright Family
We are saddened by the loss of Leslie but rejoice with the hope ahead. Help is on the way real soon . It will be a delight to see his smiling face again.
Recently we had opportunity to be out in service on zoom talking about ole days and had a lot of laughs.
We will always remember how he cherished the truth and gave his youth in Jehovah’s service and continued to do so for decades .
He always tried to help others know Jehovah and did what he could to help others put Kingdom
Interests first .
We will never forget his loan to help me get my first pioneer car .
Much Christian Affection

Q: What will you never forget about Leslie?
A: Leslie was my big brother who taught me so much. His love of sports is something he shared with me when he taught me how to throw and catch a football, be a goalie for hockey (only forgot to tell me to protect my fingers when putting the stick to the ice), how to shoot a basketball and how to bat, throw and catch a baseball.
Leslie also liked to play games. He taught me to play Monopoly and Risk. He also enjoyed music very much. He knew all the bands and introduced me to the Rolling Stones, Three Dog Night and the Beatles.
Leslie also had a love of food and cooking. He always was trying new things and new ways of preparing items.
As we grew and he moved on, he was still my big brother. When I moved to Mass. for work, Leslie was there to encourage me and lend me an extra $20 to get by until I got paid. It was a pleasure to be with him and Helene as they were dating.
When Leslie and Helene moved to Calais, I recall going to visit them. They loved the life they built together no matter where. But most of all Leslie loved Helene!
Will always love and miss you, big brother! Thanks for all the memories...

Q: How did you meet Leslie?
A: I first met Leslie at the Poland Spring Resort in Maine when he was on vacation with his wife Helen. My husband Marty and I were assigned to a table in the dining room where they were sitting. I was immediately struck by his pleasant demeanor and her outspokenness which I found refreshing. Almost immediately we connected because we discovered they were Jehovah's Witnesses, just like me! What were the chances?
Although my husband is of another faith, Leslie befriended him. Needless to say, we spent much of the vacation hanging with them! He found the two of them friendly, kind and quick to laugh at his jokes. How can you not like someone like that? I was struck by how tall Leslie was, and how his face lit up and his dimples stood out when he smiled. But most of all, I could see how much he loved his wife.
I found this touching, romantic, an inspiration.
When they left for France, we attended his good-bye party and told them how we'd miss them, and how we enjoyed spending time with them in Maine,
our favorite state.
Occasionally, I would attend meetings at their Kingdom Hall in Sharon. He was always warm and welcoming as was Helen.
The last time I saw him was in his backyard. He was pleasant as usual. I am saddened and shocked by his untimely death. You who are related to him or close friends, must be heartbroken at such a loss.
I know he is in Jehovah God's memory, as is his dear wife Helen, and will someday be back on a beautiful earth. Luke 20:38. I look forward to that time when I will see the two lovebirds again! In the meantime we will miss him. May Jehovah God wrap his arms around you who loved him dearly, through the love of your family and friends.
