I worked at Maine Maritime Academy Eli's senior year and served as his advisor for the Navy Reserve SSO Program. I am incredibly saddened to hear this heart breaking news. I had the honor of swearing him into the Navy Reserve and was always so incredibly impressed by his work ethic and rigor in his academics. I very much enjoyed getting to know him during our advising meetings but never had much advising to do because he was so well put together! He had goals and knew how he was going to achieve them. My deepest regrets go out to Eli's family and friends.

I first met Eli when I was a cadet aboard the Empire State. Eli taught me so much when I was a cadet. I always looked up to him and wanted to be as good of a mate as him when I started working. Not only did eli help me with working knowledge, he aided me countless times in my sea projects. Eli was incredibly smart and helped me through celestial navigation, my hardest sea project. I will never forget that Eli taught me how to do my first three star fix. A few years later I was fortunate enough to join the ship as a mate alongside him for my first hitch. Once again, Eli went above and beyond with teaching me and helping me as I navigated the job. I owe so much to Eli. The pictures below are from the hitch I did with Eli. On February 14th Eli brought me along on a hike in Hawaii. The Olamana trail was a difficult hike with an incredible view. Eli was a different person on the Mountain. You could tell that hiking and being outdoors was what he lived for. We had climbed all three peaks and went down the back side of the mountain, where we ran a few more miles to where we could finally call an Uber back to the ship. When covered in mud, Ubers had turned down giving us rides back to the ship. I was going to be late for watch and Eli gave me a shirt of his to use as a rag to clean off the mud so we could get back in time. Eli was a true team player and a great shipmate. When we finally got back to Pearl Harbor from the hike we had to run together to get to the only gate still open. Our 7 mile hike quickly tacked on a few more miles. Eli was in much better shape than I, and could run much faster. I will never forget laughing when he said he was sorry for taking off, but he wanted to make sure he called his girlfriend Annie since it was Valentine’s Day. I could go on with more stories about Eli from making corn hole boards on the ship or to countless watch turnover stories and listening to the Coast Guard talk to drunks over the radio. Eli left a massive impact on me and I wish I could have spent more time with him, but I am incredibly grateful for the time I did get with him. Thanks for everything Eli.

I moved to Maine when I was 7 and Eli was one of the first kids my age that I met and became friends with. We were alter boys at the Sunday mass at church and sparred frequently in Taekwondo class in the basement, through the years we ended up playing soccer together and shared many memories in Latin class, trying to decipher cryptic ancient texts. We shared a desire to go and be sailors at Maine Maritime where I was greeted with a warm welcome of 50 push-ups my first morning there as Eli was the freshman PT instructor and got his revenge for those sparring bouts many years ago. We closed out our time in college by somehow getting involved in a state chess tournament which was a hilarious day where we all got to act sophisticated and dress fancy pretending we were good at the game. Eli and I had a ton of fun memories over the years and I thoroughly enjoyed following and being apart of the adventure every step of the way as he’s one of the best influences anyone could aspire to be like more in life. Thank you Mrs. Olson for creating this page to share the great memories of Eli.

I met Eli my sophomore year of high school when he used to come for after-school sports. We had mutual friends who encouraged us to connect and I am so glad they did. We started talking everyday and became close friends over the next couple of years. He was such a kind soul with an a presence and maturity far beyond his years. He was grounded and calm during a time in our lives where everything seemed to be changing, which made those around him feel comforted. We went to prom together his last year and shared so many lovely memories with close friends! Eli will be missed but will always live on in the way he made others feel.

I first met Eli as a newborn infant at a gathering at the McDermott’s house. The McDermott girls were singing “Eli Eli Olson” to the tune of Old MacDonald’s Farm. Ever after I always thought of Eli as Eli Eli Olson.

I only attended Maine Maritime Academy for 1 year, but Eli was a very close friend. Being from another state, I didn’t know a lot about Maine, but he was more than willing to teach. He was always willing to help prep uniforms for inspection, help study for exams, as well as get out and be active. One of the most Genuine and Kind people I have ever known. I will miss you Eli.

Dear Olson Family,
Thank you for sharing Eli with all of us. We are all better people for having him in our lives. Eli has a special place in my heart. As my Dad's Godson, Amelia and I viewed him as our brother. We are so incredibly lucky that we have as many memories as we do with Eli. His spirit, and faith, will never be forgotten.
