Obituary of Raymond H. Poulin, Jr.
Dexter - Raymond H Poulin, Jr. (82) passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 23, 2023, after a short illness.
He was born on July 10, 1941, in Dexter, ME, the son of Raymond H. Poulin, Sr. and Germaine (Gilbert) Poulin. He married his beloved wife, Sandra (Pomroy) Poulin, in October of 1960 and had three sons, Peter, David and Michael.
He went to Dexter schools and graduated from Dexter High School, Class of 1959. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Gorham State Teacher College, Class of 1963. He went on to graduate with his Masters in Education (1973) and his Advance Study in Superintendency (1981) from the University of Maine, Orono.
He had a long and successful sixty-year career in education impacting many students, faculty, administrators, coaches, politicians, and the State of Maine. He began his career in Dover-Foxcroft as a junior high school teacher in 1963. He went on to be a teacher at Foxcroft Academy, junior high school principal in Dover-Foxcroft, high school principal at Dexter Regional High School, superintendent at Guilford school systems, Maine’s Deputy Commissioner of Education, superintendent of Dexter school systems, consultant for the University of Maine, Maine Department of Education for statewide district consolidation, independent consultant for numerous Maine school districts and finished his distinguished career as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees at Foxcroft Academy. He received many awards including Maine Principal of the Year award in 1985.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. You could find him flyfishing on the West Branch, some remote trout pond in Maine or the Yellowstone River in Montana or find him hunting deer in Ripley or hunting duck on the Piscataquis River. He taught his boys and his grandchildren all these skills and created a family of outdoorsmen and women. He was an outstanding auctioneer sometimes coercing people to purchase things they never even wanted. He was a douser and with his apple branch found many water wells for his friends. He would often play tricks with people with his prosthetic eye. He enjoyed his friends, The Usual Suspects, where they would meet every Friday night at 5PM for a beer or two for over 50 years.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Sandra (Pomroy) Poulin, and is survived by his three sons, Peter and his wife, Liz, of Austin, TX, David of Rye, NH, and Michael and his wife, Sherri, of Dover-Foxcroft. He is also survived by his partner of sixteen years, Penny Wilkins, along with his grandchildren, Paige, Meaghan, Grace, Remington, Travis, Lillian and Olivia as well as his great-grandchildren, River, Jubilee, John, Grant, and soon to be Juliette.
