Greenville - Gracia Isabelle Eisman, born on April 13, 1929 in Guilford, ME, passed away February 21, 2024, after a long, full life. Always quiet and unassuming, in 1947, Gracia was the first senior class president at Guilford HS to be elected unanimously and in 1951 the first Guilford woman to complete her law degree at Portia Law School in Boston. On September 15, 1951, Gracia married her companion of 55 years, Howard E. Eisman of Cranston, RI, and had two children, a daughter Gracia Isabelle and son Robert Carlton. In addition to being a great Mom, Gracia began to pursue her passions: politics, history, helping veterans, and reading. A believer in the rights to and importance of voting, Gracia was a member of the League of Women Voters and worked the polls wherever she lived for most of her working life. As a child of WWII, Gracia knew politics caused wars and created new generations of veterans. To help those forgotten after wars, she was a long-time member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. As a veteran’s advocate in Maine, she volunteered countless hours working to improve veterans’ benefits with improved care, and became a voice to provide more veterans’ nursing homes. To understand the crazy world she was born into, Gracia became an avid reader, student and “teacher” of history. She possessed an innate ability to make history fascinating and fun. Gracia volunteered many years with the Lewiston Historical Society and the Moosehead Historical Society & Museums, assisting with creating exhibits and teaching demonstrations to bring history to people of all ages. In Greenville, Gracia served on the Board of Directors for the Moosehead Historic Society & Museums for many years. She also was a Docent and later the Head Docent at the Eveleth-Crafts-Sheridan Historical House until her retirement from the Moosehead Historical Society. Gracia’s unquenchable thirst for reading also led her to volunteering for Literacy Volunteers and she remained active for years. While we will miss Gracia, our warm memories of time spent together will remain always. She is to be laid to rest at the Maine State Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.
