Obituary of Dorothy L. Young
Westbrook and Dover-Foxcroft - Dorothy Lorraine Newcomb Young passed away on February 21, 2024 at the age of 89. Dorothy was born in Portland, Maine, on June 16, 1934, along with her twin sister, Barbara, to Oliver and Martha (Ross) Newcomb of Chebeague Island. She grew up on Chebeague, where she began a life-long love affair with the island and its people. She attended local schools and graduated as Salutatorian from Chebeague Island High School in 1954 (in a class of 12 where sister Barbara was Valedictorian). As a young woman, she moved to the Portland area to find a job, working at the S.D. Warren mill in Westbrook for a couple of years. Her work in Westbrook led to her finding a boyfriend who would become her husband, and she and Robert Young were married on November 20, 1954, shortly after he had returned from serving in the Korean War. They would remain husband and wife for life, reaching 69 years of marriage. Sons, Robert and David, were born in the following years while the family resided in Westbrook, and in 1962 the Young family realized ‘the American dream’ when they bought their home on Brook Street in the Pride’s Corner neighborhood of Westbrook. They would remain in this home for 51 years, before moving to Dover-Foxcroft, Maine in 2013.
Dorothy began taking on small jobs to help with the family budget, baby-sitting and then house cleaning for individuals and families in Westbrook and Portland. These families all became friends to her, including the Stepps, Shaws, Swensons, Leiters, Richardsons, and more. Later she would take her cleaning and organizing skills to a nursing home in Westbrook and then to Riverside Estates, just a half mile walk from her home, where she worked for several years until her retirement. A fastidious cleaner and housekeeper, she enjoyed making a space look sparkling clean. Her own home was always a model of neatness and cleanliness. She was a diligent worker in anything she took on. An excellent cook, her family and church family enjoyed her delicious meals and desserts. Cooking was another way for her to love and serve others.
For 60 years Dorothy was a member and integral part of the ministry of North Deering Alliance Church, where she always sought to serve God and love people. She hosted ‘5-day clubs’ at her home, taught Sunday School, helped organize Alliance Women’s events, and much more. She made many lifelong friendships at the church, and was always looking to help out anyone who needed anything. She was very empathetic, able to understand the pain others were experiencing, and often found a way to help. Most recently she and Robert have been worshiping at Discovery Bible Church in Dover-Foxcroft. Her Christian faith was a vital part of her life right up until her final breath.
She enjoyed the beauties found around scenic New England, especially in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and along the coast of Maine, and spoke of Casco Bay as the “most beautiful place on earth.” She loved to go to Chebeague Island as often as possible, spending holidays and vacation times there. For years she telephoned her mother and brother Raymond every night, checking on them and the happenings on Chebeague, and sharing life with them.
Dorothy will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was predeceased by all five of her siblings: Charles Newcomb, Alvin Newcomb, Raymond Newcomb, Ethel Newcomb Lanouette, and twin sister, Barbara Newcomb Wirzburger. Surviving are her husband Robert; two sons, Robert
and wife Emma of Dover-Foxcroft, and David and wife Rachel of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; 6 grandchildren: Joshua, Jared, Serena, Candice, Briana and Jasmine; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
