Obituary of Stanley "Skeeter" Higgins

Glenburn and Dover Foxcroft - Stanley “Skeeter” Higgins of Glenburn, Maine, died on July 19, 2024, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor, Maine, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. The second child of John D. Higgins and Rose G. Angelone Higgins, Stanley was born on November 15, 1938, in Camden, New Jersey. He is an alumnus of Pitman High School, Pitman, New Jersey and the University of Southern Maine. In November of his senior year in high school, having completed the requirements for graduation, Stan enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Herzo Base in Germany. Following his military service he resided with his family in New Jersey and served an apprenticeship as a pipe fitter and boiler maker. In the 1960’s his love of Maine and the outdoors brought him and his family to Highland Plantation where he owned and operated a hunting lodge and store and was a Maine Guide. In the later 1970’s he earned his bachelor’s degree and enjoyed being an educator. Stan began his tenure at Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, Maine in 1979 as the Training Director. His career took him to Pinkham Lumber in Ashland, Great Southern Paper in Georgia, and Leaf River in Mississippi. In 1990 he returned to Millinocket as the Director of Industrial Relations. A man of many talents, Stan enjoyed gardening and landscaping, photography, drawing, painting, and woodworking. He perfected his skill in fly tying and was an enthusiastic fisherman and hunter. He was high spirited, adventurous and fun loving and truly loved every moment spent at his camp in the North Maine Woods. Stan treasured his family and friends and cherished his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Mary Alyce. He leaves behind his three sons: Christopher (Lorri) of Boothbay, Maine; Gerald (Andrea) of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Michael (Paige) of Arlington, Tennessee; five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. At Stan’s request there will be no funeral or memorial service. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
