David, you were one of my late husband Marq's favorite singer songwriters. I can still hear my husband playing your music when I would come home from work. He wrote music and played guitar. I hope the both of you are playing some beautiful music together. Rest peacefully.

So sorry for the loss of your husband, father and friend to so many. His music has touched so many people and I'm so thankful it touched me. My dream was to hear David in person and unfortunately, that did not happen. I will still be touched by his songs by the CDs I have. God bless all of you.

It's really hard to express everything I am feeling in the aftermath of Dave's death. He paved the way for many a Maine songwriter to believe that they (we) could make a difference. His ability for creating music & messages to make the world a better place will resonate always. He urged people all over the world to slow down... to see, hear, taste, embrace & share the simple & good things in life. He & I crossed paths frequently in our travels with guitars & our songs... it was always a pleasure to share in & perform in a musical event with him... be it here in Maine or in Kerrville TX. His sense of humor, his songs & his passion for connection were infectious... & he was just so down to earth & accessible. I LOVED seeing him in recent years playing music with his equally talented sons... the love they shared was palpable. I am sending BIG LOVE to Dave's family, inclusive of all whose hearts were touched by his music. Rest in peace & thank you Dave... your music & our memories of you will be a celebration... NOW... & forever.

I'm sorry to hear of David's passing. I live in Hardwick, Vt and David would come to the area often to sing and spread his joy of music. Brought his family with him a couple of times. We have a few of his CD's and are playing them, rekindling memories. What a great gift he was. His music goes on playing.

Dave's songs have inspired and heartened me over the years, and I'm grateful that I got to hear him play live in a little cafe in Placerville, CA, in the early 2000s. "Hope for One and All" and "Red, Red Rose" are two of my favorites. My deepest condolences to Dave's family and musical colleagues.

My deepest condolences go out to David's family, and his various band members over the years.
While growing up in Dover-Foxcroft in the 60s/70s, I was barely aware of David. (Years later I found out my father had once hired him to perform at an event.) The first time I saw David perform was at Foxcroft Academy in 1982. My boyfriend and I had come up from Massachusetts to visit my family, and I took him to David's concert, though my boyfriend was not too keen on a high school gym concert with a performer unknown to him. David made such a favorable impression on us we became fans that night. That boyfriend later became an Arts and Entertainment newspaper reporter in Massachusetts. We would try to see David whenever possible, in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, and the boyfriend wrote glowing reviews of David's performances, which appeared in his employers' newspapers.
Since those days, I have continued to try to get to David's concerts in the "tri-state" area whenever possible, and I married a Foxcroft Academy classmate (a fellow David fan) who actually saw David and Neil perform in a Dover-Foxcroft living room "back in the day". I recently bought front row tickets for David's scheduled concert at the Vinegar Hill Music Theatre in Arundel, Maine, and I learned of David being ill when the concert was postponed and then cancelled.
I will very much miss not seeing David in person again. Over the past 42 years I believe I have managed to compile a complete collection of his songs, so I have those readily available to enjoy.
David, thank you for all of the music and memories!

I met and heard Dave sing first when a student at Sedomocha Jr. High School and he sang "Fire" which all loved and asked if he would sing the song again. The next time I heard him sing was at the D-F town Hall in a money raising event for Dwight "Woody" Woodsworth and again he sang "Fire" putting feeling into his music. I am very sorry to the Mallett family and must let all of know he was a fine person to be friend of!!

In the mid 1980's, David, Chuck Kruger and Tim Sample performed a benefit show at the Brunswick Maine naval air station officers club. Doc Skillings had met David after sewing up some injuries from a motorcycle accident. This show was for the rotary club. From this point on David became a friend and my favorite voice in music. We saw him perform as often as we could in Maine and New York over 40 years. We will miss you dear friend. Love to Jayne and your family. Rest easy

Bless you David. In our combined 120 plus years of music appreciation countless artists come to mind. But Dave holds a very special place in that long and varied lineup. Visits to our home in Washington County were not complete without opening the windows, sitting in the front yard swing and playing any of many Dave Mallett CDs. The seals appreciated it too. Same could be said for our quarter century in Waldo County. Feel so fortunate to have seen him in concert so many times in places ranging from Waldoboro to Mount Vernon, Ellsworth to Bangor and Brewer--always keeping an eye out for their (Dave, Michael, Susan, Rob, Roy, et al.) next appearance which, sadly, will never be in person but their music lives on--that road goes on forever. Mallett family and friends so sorry for your loss.

I was introduced to David in 1980 when I moved to NH. He performed regularly back then at The Folkways in Peterborough. My daughter and I fell in love with his music, I still play his cds regularly and booked the recent concert in New London NH which was cancelled due to his illness. I can’t express how saddened I am to hear of his passing. His music has followed me throughout the country and helped me through some very tough times. I always said he was more of a poet than anything. He will be so very missed. My sincerest condolences to this dear soul’s family and friends. We’ll see you on the other side Davey.

Jayne and family: Love to all. Nice seeing you at the cafe across the street after a Rockland concert. Dessert for us, probably supper for you and Dave. Always enjoyed catch ups in the aisle of Judkin’s and Will’s Shop ‘n Save with Dave, when we came into town with family for stays at camp at the lake. Remembered taking our oldest when he was 3yr to NH to one of Dave’s concerts outside an old Inn Resort. Loved an Ogunquit small venue concert. Dave’s songs and lyric artistry such a joy and legacy to all. So glad we connected through messages this past Spring and this past July. Another throwback:Loved the practices at Central Hall with Dave and brother Neil and 3 of us gals to get ready for a hootenanny at the FA school assembly in the gym in ‘65. Oh, his derp love for you, his children and spouses, family and especially the grandkids, he said of them in July to me”one of my greatest treasures and pleasures of all” my grandkids, he added “doesn’t get any better than that!” Big Bear Pond Turner Hugs and prayers from Larry & Nancy Pullen

I am crushed about David's passing. I met him in 1977 in August, it was at the wedding of Don Parker in Bradford, the town where I lived which is near Sebec. The service was nice and when finished there was outdoor entertainment.
It was David; playing outside along side the Parker's Lumber Mill business.. And for some reason later on when we'd refer to that he liked to call them the "Porkers" ???
This wedding was the first outing for my three week old daughter, when Dave took a break, we spoke a bit and he said hello to my new daughter, hugged her and then back to singing.
I have David's original first 4 albums, all are wonderful, such a Storyteller, from his heart and life's experiences. A Poet.
Three years later I found myself teaching H.S. in E. Corinth, ME I approached the Principal and ask if we could have an assembly day, he agreed. I contacted David and he along with Mike Burd, there they were on stage in the gym. He played for an hour. He said it was great to do such a gig. Each time we crossed paths thereafter we'd reminisce about the event.
Years later I moved to Charleston, SC and wrote David about performing here, I hadfound an suitable venue, etc. and told David, he said call my Booking Agent as he always wanted to see Charleston. There is a large cadre of Mainahs around here, we meet twice a year for picnics, I approached them to test enthusiasm about David coming here a few years back. Some knew of David, other not, yet all were enthused at the prospect. He replied that he was slowing down "these days" and now was gigging in mostly in Maine.
Before this thought shortly after getting set in Charleston my wife and I went to Savannah, GA to see him play for the Folk Song Festival there, it was the time he had just after he recorded his "the MaineWood"s D. of Thoreau's famous time in the Maine Woods. Of course I purchased the C.D. and after the show my wife and I spoke privately with him and he said Thoreau was his "Main Man". Mine too. I've played that album 100's of times.
I've had Aunts/Uncles pass, friends pass too and have been very saddened. Yet my feelings that have been pouring forward upon David's passing through me have been unexpected and I have teared up several times
His work touched my soul, affected me emotionally.
I last wrote him a few weeks ago about a tragic accident on the Milo Road this past spring, knowing he knew the victims as did I... uncharacteristically, he didn't answer and it made me wonder, Now I think I know why. I will miss his song stories, is Poetry sooo much. I have had many experiences akin to what he's written, I just couldn't put them to song. Once on Dave's FB page he was pictured on his Ford Tractor, grey w/ red trim from the 40's, I asked him, a Ford 8n or 9n. He said 9n and to come see when him/it I get back to Maine. I never was able to make the trip.
Due to potential health concerns with long travel times I just can't make the trek to say goodbye personally to his family, I so wish I could.
David was bigger than life in my eyes, his music paints pictures. So evocative.
He's gone, his music will last for ages. Good bye David.

Every spring, as I ready my gardens, I sing "The Garden Song" and thank Dave Mallett for one of the greatest songs ever. I would guess it was meant as a gardener's song, but (as a family therapist) I always heard it as a song about life, how we live it, how we raise our children and grandchildren, how we understand that we are all on a journey that unfolds one inch at a time. I was an early fan of Dave's and am still all these years later. To his family---Jayne, Luke, Will, Molly and others---I send my best appreciation for sharing him with us for all these years. May his spirit soar ever onward!
