Evelyn B. Higgins

Obituary of Evelyn B. Huntington Higgins

Dover-Foxcroft-  Evelyn B. Huntington Higgins, 88, died May 5, 2017, at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft.  She was born June 17, 1928, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Kenneth and Ivy (Merrill) Huntington.

For many years she was a single mother to her daughters, Tina and Cindy. During this time she worked the evening shift as a CNA at Mayo Memorial Hospital and Mayo Regional Hospital, so that she could have more time with her beloved daughters.  She also worked with her mother at Steadman's Grocery.

Evelyn grew up as a member of the United Methodist Church, Dover- Foxcroft where she sang in the choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, summer camp counselor, youth group leader, and spear headed the Christmas wreath project.

Her home was always welcoming and her arms were always open for Tina and Cindy's friends.

After her marriage to Larry in 1968, they bought their home at 169 Summer Street.  She loved their home and was very proud of their flower, vegetable and fruit gardens.  Many of us have fond memories of eating raspberries right from the bush.

Jenny Mae was born in 1975 and brought much happiness, joy and love to their home, and completed their family.  Faith McLeish wrapped her loving arms around Jenny Mae, and that's when a true friendship was born between Evelyn, Faith, and The Church of the Nazarene.

She was truly the matriarch of the family, and loved everyone deeply. With much courage, strength and her never ending faith in God, she lived her life, always thinking of others before herself.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents; her infant daughter, Karen Lynn; her step-father, Walter Steadman, her brother, Howard Huntington; her sisters, Dorothy Anderson and Sarah Severance; her great-grandson, Joseph MacGarvey Olson; and her step-children, Barbara and Neil.  She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Higgins of Dover-Foxcroft; her daughters, Justina Clukey Scarberry and her husband, Michael of Enon, Ohio, Cynthia Clukey Hudson and her husband, Stephen of Worcester, Massachusetts, and Jenny Mae Higgins and her caregiver, Kathy Ryder of Dexter;  her step-daughters, Susan and Denise; her grandchildren, Carole Olson, Ryan and David Hudson, Heather Steele, and Andrew and Jason Scarberry; her great-grandchildren, Zachary, Abigail, Ivy, Michael, Bella, Jonah, Joshua, Rachael, Aaron, Abigail, Austin, Kaylie, Brittney, Noah and Zoey; her brother-in-law, Everett Severance; her dear friends, Karen and Russell LaBlanc; and her beloved nieces and nephews that “Auntie” loved as her own.

Visiting hours will be held to 5-7pm Monday, May 8, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.  A funeral service will be conducted 1pm Tuesday, May 9, at the Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church with Nazarene Pastor Bob Armstrong and retired Pastor Bob Herring officiating.  Burial will be in the family lot in Gray Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated, or those who wish may make donations to the Charlotte White Center, 572 Bangor Road, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.  Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
