I met your wife Mary in 1979 when she was living with her family in Manchester CT. My brother Peter was dating Mary's sister Barbara before Barbara started dating another young man. Mary and I were good friends, and spent time together when I attended U of Hartford in 1979-80, and 1980-81. I did not see her much after she moved to Parkman Maine and started working for Guilford Industries, although she did visit us at our family summer camp east of Maine. She was an avid runner with an infectious laugh and a strong personality. I am aggrieved to hear of her physical departure from her family and friends and hope that your time together will ease not seeing her daily. I have life long memories of Mary Margaret, and her mom and dad, and am heartened to hear that she had children and raised a family while continuing to work in her chosen field of creativity. Best to you all. Greg

Sending lots of love & prayers to all who were close to Mary...I also pray that Mary is reunited with Mr. & Mrs. Shainin and Barbara, etc.
Thank you for posting and sharing this 'In Memory of'...
A little background...I'm Kim Lavery, who considered Barbara my 'Best Friend from 6th Grade', in Manchester, CT. which then carried on to when she went to Loomis Chaffee...
Long story short, The Shainin's had a huge impact on my young adult life (Lakewood Circle) and I will always cherish you all, even if some of us have not met. Barbara was immensely intelligent and talented and had such a positive affect on all who she came in contact with...
Mary, the next oldest sister, taught us a lot about life, music, creativity...she also had a sense of style that was contagious...
Ellen, the next oldest sister, who was still at home in the early 70's, was also an inspiration!
I'm sad to hear about Mary's passing and, again, send lots of love and prayers.
If there is anything I can do, please feel free to reach out to me:

Memories from Abbie Fowler Elementary School.
The strength I saw in Mary still resonates with me.
The news of her passing was shared by one of her students, my daughter, Liz Abbott, in her vibrant organic vegetable & Fruit garden. A beautiful place to share Mary's name.
Blessings to Mary as she brings light and love to heaven and beyond the stars.

Ms. Lightbody, you gave me the inspiration to become an artist. Your encouragement was always my stronghold when I felt like I was failing. You were my friend as well as my Teacher. Being your teachers aid gave me such joy. You created a safe haven in your classroom. I'd escape there during lunch period and when I'd have anxiety attacks during class I know you'd welcome me. You were a great inspiration. And I have missed you. Rest in peace my dear Teacher.

My heart reaches out to your family. Mary touched my and my daughters' hearts.
She was a fantastic mentor, teacher and friend, to both my daughters. Mary always held her students and my daughters, accountable to their highest potential. This is what made her such a great teacher.
She encouraged Dakota to apply to Gould, where she was accepted, but financially we couldn't swing it. She coached her through the application and always gave sound advice. "Mrs. Lightbody said." I have happily heard from both girls for years.
Dakota has become quite the potter because of Mary.
Aino looked to Mary as a sounding board. She knew that Mary knew all the BS that went on and she could always count on her.
Aino a tenth grader took everything that Mary said about art and life as law. She will miss her most.
Mary's staunch privacy drove my kids crazy! They had a game with Mary trying to figure out where her camp was. They desperately wanted to show up there and surprise her. After reading this the game is sadly over.
She was so proud of her kids! She loved sharing stories of you all. She once said "I'm getting in shape so I can push Jimmies ass around in a wheel chair!" I always loved the image.
Thank you for allowing us to share our feelings with you. It helps the healing process for all.
We'll all think of her often.
Blessed be,
Erica Rudloff

So sorry for your loss. I learned so much from her while she was at Dexter and I will always cherish my time with her and her ability to light up any room she walked in to. She was truly passionate about most everything she did. She is missed by many. I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to learn from such an intelligent woman.

I met Mary when she came to Bingham to teach at UKVHS. At the same time I was traveling route 16 in the opposite direction and we compared our "moose count " numbers. She always seemed to see more than me.. She was beloved by the students here.. one of them being one of my daughters. She took on the project of painting a mural in the health center using the students from her art classes and it is still appreciated every day. She was a wonderful addition to our community and was sadly missed when she left here. Louise Davis Strickland

I'm so very sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful and inspiring woman. She was and will always be one of my mentors. Mary (or Lightbod, as we so lovingly referred to her at Valley High) was a force to be reconed with and taught me to always follow my heart even if others doubted it or the path might be a little bumpy. She encouraged me to stray from my comfort zone both artistically and personally. She helped me realize my potential in many aspects of life and helped me to see the value and beauty in all things, even myself. I look around my home now and see pieces of her everywhere; the bowl that holds my jewelry next to my bed with her signature on the bottom, the "Wondrous Strange" poster hung on the wall that sparks fond memories of our adventures to the Farnsworth, and my "artsy fartsy playlist" with the best of the Cranberries and Bob Dylan which she introduced me to during our long after school throwing sessions. Mary provided me safe haven during the hard times and a gentle nudge when I needed it. She will be remembered fondly and I hope that she was able to find the same peace she so often provided to me.

Jimmy and family,
Mary was such a talented person and was so very proud of her family and their accomplishments. She would always update me on what everyone was doing when she came to the office and show me things they had done. Her life was cut far too short, she had so much more to give and do, she will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family now and the days ahead. We send our deepest sympathies for your loss.

Thanks for giving Vermeer & Cezanne to my students, tolerating zero nonsense, and being 100% dedicated to what mattered most...your time as a grandmother was cut too short, but somehow I'm sure your grandkids will know the joy of reading a summer afternoon at the lake.
