Obituary of John A. Glover
Dover-Foxcroft – John A. Glover, 90, husband of the late Barbara (Roberts) Glover, passed away peacefully July 12, 2017, at Hibbard Nursing Home. He was born April 25, 1927, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Elmer A. and Julia (Gilman) Glover. He was a graduate of Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1945, and attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Education. He received an MA in Education from the University of Maine in 1964. A U.S. Army veteran, he served at Ft. Devens and Ft. Dix from1946-1948.
He was a voracious reader, passionate about the things he believed in, an avid University of Michigan football fan and often quoted Ogden Nash. He loved his family, his camp on Sebec Lake (especially all aspects of plumbing), his church, and a good laugh.
John began a long teaching career at Anson Academy and South Paris High School, before coming to Foxcroft Academy, where he taught history for 29 years, retiring in 1983 as head of the History Department. He was proud to accompany the Foxcroft Academy team to the National BiCentennial Competition on the Constitution and Bill of Rights in Washington D.C. for four years with his colleague and good friend, Rusty Willette. In 2015, he was presented the Tillson D. Thomas Award, given annually to a past faculty or staff member who served FA with the highest degree of professionalism. His legacy includes not only his family but also the impact he had on the hundreds of students to whom he was not only a teacher but also a guide and source of inspiration.
While John and Barbara lived in Monson, he represented Monson on the Board of Directors of MSAD 68. He was also a member of the Monson Planning Board. He served as treasurer of the Piscataquis Valley Fair Association from 1964-1974, was a past member of the Small Woodlands Owners Association of Maine, and a life member of the NEA, MTA, and MRTA. He also enjoyed the long-lasting friendships he had with other members of the Piscataquis County Retired Teachers Association.
John was a faithful member of the United Church of Christ in both Monson and Dover-Foxcroft. He served in many capacities for the Coordinating Council for the Maine Conference, UCC, including as a member of the Executive Board of the Penobscot-Piscataquis Association, and the Church and Ministry Committee of the Maine UCC.
John is survived by five children, Carol Blanchard of Milo; Janis Glover and her husband, Rick Beebe, of Hamden, CT; Jeffrey Glover and his wife, Janice, of Arvada, CO; Gail Glover and her husband, Dan Joyce, of Fairfax, VA; and John S. Glover and his wife, Chiaolian, of Portland. He leaves eight grandchildren, Chad and Ryan Blanchard, Evan Glover, Julia and Owen Joyce, John A. II, Justin, and Rachel Glover; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth G. Oakes, and two brothers, William and Charles Glover.
John’s family extends their appreciation for the compassionate and loving care he received from the staff at both Mayo Regional Hospital and Hibbard Nursing Home.
