Dear Peggy, Tobey, Erin, Ellen, Billy & Faunce,
After reading many other expressions of sympathy and condolences and realizing that we are not alone in being at a loss for words....our brains knew that Charlie's body was getting weaker and weaker, but HIS brain was as sharp as ever. Our hearts are hurting with and for each and everyone of you, your families and the multitude of friends far and near that were touched in some way by Charlie. He was one-in-a-million. We lost a great man, Charlie was the hardest working man I ever knew, had the pleasure of working with him on several occasions, always fun to be around, he'd give the shirt off his back if u needed it, he will be sadly missed, my condolences to Peggy and family

It is with a heavy heart I write my sympathy and condolences to the Cleaves family for the passing of Charlie. Charlie was a special person who loved the farm, was dedicated to the conservation of his forest and other natural resources and was always trying to improve the way his family does business. We were all fortunate to have had Charlie in our lives. For me, Charlie was one of those key people who shaped me throughout my childhood. I really enjoyed his visits and his sense of humor and hearing his stories. He gave me one of my first jobs and taught me the value of working hard.

Charlie was one of the best - a great friend - smart and loaded with common sense - superb work ethic - one of a kind - very thoughtful - very supportive of me when I was Town Manager -
Something I greatly appreciated and will alway remember - the Cleaves family are the best seed potato farmers in New England thanks to Charlie, Billy, and their families. Their potatoes are the top of the line Chef quality and make the best French fries this side of the equator. Margaret and I know for sure because Charlie always made sure we got a bag of their finest - and aside from having several baked potatoes we made French fries galore - a treat we always looked forward to - an always thanks to CHARLIE !!!

My sincere sympathies to the Cleaves family. Charlie was a great friend who could be funny , determined, exasperating, so generous! He loved to come into the store and give everyone a hard time. He was very generous to the Congregational church giving us potatoes for our chicken pie suppers and then insisting on paying for pies he ordered. “If I can’t pay for the pies, you are not getting the potatoes!”, he’d say. I will always smile when I think of him.

I can’t think of words that express my heartache for you all. The friendship Charlie shared with my parents was like no other. He did SO much for me from teaching me things as a child to lending me things as an adult. It may have been a box truck to move or an inspection sticker on a Sunday night when I needed it before Monday. He was always willing to help.
