Obituary of Norman J. Breton
DEXTER- Norman Joseph “Mike” Breton, 89, passed away Saturday morning, June 2, 2018 at Dexter Health Care. Mike was born on December 15,1928 in Skowhegan, the eldest of five children to his parents Michel Francis Breton (1906-1979) and Leona Cecelia (Lagasse) Breton (1908-2001). Being the eldest child in a large family during the Great Depression came with responsibility and after graduating eighth grade he left Catholic school to work full-time hauling and delivering ice and working at a grocery store until he enlisted in the Army. He served for two tours of duty, one during the end of World War II and another at the beginning of the Korean War. After returning, Mike held a number of jobs before settling in as a manager at First National in Madison. He would later move his family to Dexter to take a position as a buyer for Dexter Shoe Co. Later he worked at Dexter Regional High School doing facilities maintenance. He was a fixture there for many years until his retirement. After his retirement Mike still needed to keep busy and he served as a part-time driver for Central Maine Drafting Services. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. Well known around Dexter for his distinctive laugh and his sense of humor and charm, he loved to walk around town, to fish and hunt, and spend time with family at camp in Ripley.
Mike is predeceased by his parents, his brother Thomas “Mickey” Breton (1940-1980) and sister Elaine (Breton) Pomelow (1930-2012); sons Robert Breton (1962-1962) and Alan Breton (1964-1964). He is survived by his wife of 67-years Charlene “Kitty” (Carr) Breton of Dexter, their son David Breton and his wife Cheryl of Dover-Foxcroft, and their daughter Gail Hynds and her husband Robert of Hampden; his sister Natalie (Breton) Pomelow of Skowhegan, his brother Paul Breton and wife Nancy of Coopers Mills; his grandchildren: Derek Breton and wife Charlotte of Madison, AL and their daughters Jordan, Gabriela and Amelia; Marjorie (Hynds) Besaw and husband Ian of Portland, OR and their daughters Vivian and Olivia; Tricia (Hynds) Jellison and husband Chris of Hampden and their children Lily and Mason; Brian Breton and wife Alyssa of Dexter and their children Hailee and Domenick; Sherri (Hynds) Crossman and husband Ben of Hampden and their sons Eli and Ethan; Jessi Breton and significant other Cody Coiley of Dover-Foxcroft; and Alex Hynds and fiancé Heather Conklin of Bangor.
Per Mike’s request there will not be a funeral service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Breton Camp at 219 Chandler Hill Road, Ripley on Sunday, June 17 at 2 p.m. Burial services TBA at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
