Great guy, Great teammate, great friend. I'm going to miss not seeing and talking to Bob even if it was only once a year. Lots of good memories live on.

Dear Cheryl and family,
I was shocked, and saddened when I heard of Bob's passing. I met Bob at UMO back in 1966.You couldn't help but like Whitey from the first moment you met him. He was a zany character that had character. There was a saying back then which was 'get real.' Bob didn't have 'get real,' he was real. There was nothing phony about Robert Hathorn White--what you saw is what you got. His great sense of humor and flashing smile would win you over time and time again. Four years seemed to fly by, but the 69-70 year (our last year there) was the most memorable. My brother Gary (who also knew Bob) was living in a trailer in Stillwater, which my family owned. He left school in 1968, so I had the opportunity to move off campus and into the trailer in 69. I needed two roommates, so I asked Bob and another close friend to share the trailer and the expenses. Imagine living off campus in our own place for $20.00 a month! It was a memorable year to say the least--with losing the power, to having a frozen water line and sewer line (I'll say no more) to having a tub full of dirty dishes. We spent many a morning going into Stodder Hall to shower and get ready for classes. Would I repeat that year again?-- in a heartbeat--we were in our early twenties, and we felt "ten feet tall and bulletproof." Come May of 1970, it was over. We said our goodbyes and moved on. Twenty years later I was at a Lewiston High School basketball game and noticed a referee that looked a little familiar. A head that had thick black hair with not one out of place. It must be a wig--but no--it was Whitey. We caught up a little at half time and talked about old times. About two months ago, my brother and I talked about looking Whitey up. About a week later, he told me about Bob's passing. The world is now a darker place without Bob in it. He and his smile will be sadly missed. Neil Diamond sang a song entitled "Done Too Soon." Robert Hathorn White was done too soon. I consider it an honor to call Whitey my friend. I wouldn't trade those college days for anything--well, maybe for one thing--seeing Bob just one more time and seeing him smile again.

Bob was loved by so many. He was kind and fun-loving, one of the good guys.
He will be remembered by all who knew him. As I'd see Bob around DF and Sebec Lake during my summer stays at our camp, it brought to mind the sweet memories of my carefree teen years.
My condolences to the entire family for your sudden loss of Bob. May your many memories keep him close in your hearts.

Cherie, Jere and families-On behalf of the entire Champeon family, I want to extend our deepest sympathies on Bob's passing. Brother Joe and I have many great memories of times spent with Bob: AC softball games, trips to Boston Garden, moving docks at Sebec Lake, and long discussions about sports and life. Dad has always had the utmost respect for Bob's generosity, his humor, his work ethic and his integrity. The White family has always held a near and dear place in his heart. Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Cherie, Dillen, Ian and Jere,
I have several memories of Bob, many of them from around Sebec Lake and several more of what a great athlete he was. As a 17 year old kid at about 150 lbs. ,I started playing softball in the Dover-Foxcroft mens' league. I soon learned, after Bob prevented a double play by taking me out at second base, that this indeed was a mens' league and it was competetive! We had alot of fun over the years and I even played with his and Jere's team on several occasions over the years. He was a great competitor and alot of fun but I never made the mistake of letting him "find" me at second base again. He will be missed!!

I was a 13 year old "from away" and a summer kid on Sebec Lake. At the end of our family vacation, I threw a detergent bottle into the lake with a note inside (today the EPA would frown upon this). The note said, "Whom ever finds this bottle, please write to me." The Note In The Bottle traveled down the lake waves; past the camps of Bush, McDonald and Coy. It jackknifed the beach, then floated past the camps of Annis, Stitham, and Plourde. It's final destination was past Prides Point and onto the beach in front of Priscilla White's cottage at Cotton Brook. Bob must have been out there at precisely the right time when he saw the detergent bottle with big letters scrolled upon the outside: "Note inside." Bob opened the bottle and read the note with my name and address included. Sometime in mid-September 1964 I received a letter from Bob. He said something like, 'Since I am the one who found the bottle and your note, I'm writing to tell you it was found!' I was blessed to share this old time memory with Bob at Sheri's 50th high school reunion gathering at Fred Campbell's camp a couple of years ago. He sort of remembered and we laughed about it. My sincere and heartfelt sorrow to Sheri, the Stitham family, children and grands and the White family for their true loss of a great man too soon.
