I was sad to learn of Jim's passing. I spent a delightful afternoon with him in 1994 when I did a radio interview with Jim that was aired on my radio show on WILI-AM in Willimantic, Ct. That interview is still archived on our website at http://www.wili-am.com/wp_bows.htm , scroll down to March 25, 2015, which was the last of several times I replayed it. I will always have special memories about that chance encounter.

Marilyn, I was very saddened to read of Jim's passing. I have so many fond memories of Jim and all of your family. I always enjoyed visiting with you in Willimantic and listening to all of his stories and hearing that infectious laugh and seeing that smile. I have especially never forgotten spending an evening with all of you in Fairfax, VA while on my class trip to Washington DC way back in 1965! How long ago was that??? I hope your many happy memories help to sustain you during this most difficult time. My condolences to you and all of the family. Love and friendship, Elaine

The view from dad's window
AND SO YOU ASK, which path would dad choose ......as I wondered myself. Some wait until all their loved ones gather; while others....... find it tooooo painful to depart surrounded by their dear ones. It is just to heartbreaking/heart wrenching to let go & say a final goodbye.
All day today dad labored with deep rapid heaving breaths and what providers call the 'death rattle' in his throat. Mom repeatedly held his hand and told him, "Jim, it's OK to go, you do not need to wait for Scott to arrive.....it is OK to go". She could not bear to see him labor so much. We medicated him liberally & frequently to make him as comfortable as possible.....pain med, anti anxiety med, Tylenol suppository for fever, under the tongue medication to dry up oral secretions. YET, his breathing-labored on, his eyes vacant, glazed and distant & his family gathered to stand vigil around his bed........stroking his hand, kissing his forehead and caressing his skin.
At 7:55 PM my brother Scott arrived having driven straight from the airport. After greeting us, he went to dad's bedside, picked up his hand and said "hello dad". Just prior to this moment we watched dad's chin quiver, tears form in his eyes which flickered & seemed to fix on a distant unknown point in space. It appeared as though his mouth was trying to form words and say something to an unknown someone. Holly wondered if perhaps he was looking at Dan, his eldest son who had passed away 2 & 1/2 years ago. Was he there to be the first to greet him and welcome Dad to his new heavenly home? His family was FINALLY All together again. Dad quietly slipped away at 8:00 PM with a peaceful look on his face and the faintest hint of a smile. Something we had not seen in many months.
THANK YOU TO ALL of you who have so freely given to us of your love, prayers and support. It gave us strength at a time when our own was waning. We so appreciate you ALL!
With much, MUCH love and gratitude to each of you,
Bess ( on behalf of the entire Buchanan family)
