Truly sad news. Part of my fond childhood memories were spent with Damien and the gang on Pacific St. Stickball in the street (I could still hear Mrs. Pickel saying "C'mon Pick" when Damien was at bat), wiffleball in the driveway, flashlight tag at night, and watching Met games in our basements, snowball fights/ice hockey in the sump. And of course the shed in the Pickel's backyard that Jim built. It often doubled as our clubhouse where we traded baseball cards and drew up plans for a go-kart that we built in Damien's garage. Unfortunately, the pictures were much better than the final product. Damien ALWAYS spoke of becoming a police officer since a very young age. Glad to see he succeeded beyond what he originally set out to be. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Pickel (Judy), Christina, and the rest of Damien's family.

I had the pleasure and honor of going through the New York City Police Academy with Damien and becoming city cops together. Not only was he a true gentleman, He was a man you could count on for everything and anything. 31 years later and we were still helping each other out whenever we could. Rest in peace my friend, we have the watch.

Damien came to Milo from "away"and was soon to be loved by all who he served---- No small task I would say! He truly loved the community and cared so much about the people. He was never too busy or too tired, just always ready to help in any way that he was needed.I was looking at the last text message that I had sent him----- a simple thank-you for one of his many great projects, his response was"It's just the right thing to do". Little wonder we will all miss him so much------ R.I.P.

I had the pleasure of meeting Damien at an economic development event at a Milo restaurant. He was easy to talk to and I really enjoyed learning about his background. By the time the meeting ended it was dark outside. I jumped in my Jeep and turned on my headlights but couldn't see a thing. I quickly realized that it was a bad idea to reverse my headlights during a recent repair. So, I pulled up next to the building and began swapping them back. Damien helped from start to finish and we had the opportunity to chat some more. He left a positive impression on Milo and on those he encountered. My condolences to his wife, his family, friends and the community on his loss. We can keep Damien in our hearts by treating one another with caring and his kindness.

I met Damien 4 years ago when I showed up at his office one day to talk to him about expanding the Free Summer Meals for Kids program. That's when I learned he was feeding kids during breaks and weekends with money out of his own pocket. With no small amount of nudging, I convinced him to set up a small summer meals site and distribute lunches made by an established sponsor in another town. He was a little reluctant at first, but he trusted that I was giving him good advice and gave it a go. The program was small but he saw its value -- so the next summer I nudged him again and he signed up the Town of Milo to be its own summer meals sponsor. Within just a few years, he went from serving 80 meals to around 20 kids to serving more than 3000 meals to more than I can count and was recognized by Maine's Department of Education as having the largest increase in participation for our entire county. Simply put, Damien "rocked it!' -- but he was SOOOOO humble and always told people with his straight-faced look and a bit of a twinkle that "she (that's me) made me do it." I loved working with Damien. He was a great guy and good friend. It will be hard continuing that work without him but his spirit and compassion will keep me going.

So sad to hear of Chief Pickels passing. He truly was one of the good guys. A compassionate and understanding soul who cared about everyone in this community. It will not be the same without him, he is irreplaceable. Thank you for all that you did while you were here. I wish his family peace and condolences.

Officer Pickel would always stop in Milo house of pizza and joke with me and I always make fun of him with the same stupid joke that he laughed at every time. I would call him officer pickle. He would just laugh at me. He was such a sweet man and cared about evryine. He will be sadly miss.

To Damiens Family
I am so sorry for your loss. He was such an amazing and inspiring person. Cared so deeply for everyone and for this community. Did all that he could for those in need. He was such a positive role model for my son Connor and for all the children he met. Always there for him and always said the right thing to give him that boost that he needed. Damien went out of his way to be there when connor won a scholarship essay on becoming a police officer. Connor mentioned how Damien is his idol and he hopes that one day he can be an amazing police officer like him. My son is more determined now than ever to make that happen and to be an inspiration to others as Damien was. He is heartbroken his idol is no longer here and is sad for all of his family.

Taken way too soon. I met Damien almost twenty years ago in the Manhattan Gang Squad. For the next five years I had the pleasure of coming to work and always counting on good conversation and coffee with Damien. He was the heartbeat of the unit consisting of more then twenty cops and detectives. When he wasn’t out fighting crime, he was making sure all the important administrative tasks were taken care of. Rest In Peace Damien.

I am so saddened by the news. Damien was a true professional and a caring and patient human being. When I crashed my truck on Paddy Hill Road, he was the first to show up. I thanked him, and he said, "That's what I do. I show up." I am so sad to hear his life was so short. I enjoyed talking with him every time I ran in to him while visiting Milo.

He was such a compassionate man. I always wondered how he found the time to do all he did. What a giant hole he will leave in hearts all around the area. He will be remembered and missed terribly. His legacy will be carried on in the hands and hearts of those who knew him and believed in all the causes he took on and fought for. He's gone too soon.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support of all of our students, staff, and community. You were always there and thinking outside the box. Your impact on this town was and will continue to be monumental. When speaking of my guidance lesson one day at one of your “walk through s” of school we talked about being the “ripples” to the kids to make change. I look through Facebook newsfeed tonight and see, my friend, you were a tidal wave. You will be missed, tremendously, but we will keep your legacy alive!
Your family is all in my thoughts and prayers.
