Lawrence Higgins, Jr.

Obituary of Lawrence E. Higgins, Jr.

Lawrence E. Higgins, Jr. Dover-Foxcroft - Lawrence Edwin Higgins, Jr. entered the loving and merciful presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 8, 2020, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Larry was born in Charleston, Maine on October 16, 1926, to Lawrence E. Sr. and Geneva (Farmer) Higgins. He grew up on the family farm with his 14 siblings. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and upon returning home, he hauled pulpwood and worked as a woodsman. He married Evelyn (Huntington) Clukey in 1968 and they soon bought property on Summer Street in Dover-Foxcroft. Larry and Evelyn loved all things gardening and enjoyed growing fruits, vegetables and flowers. Everyone in the family especially loved the raspberry jam that they made every year. Larry continued his love of gardening even after moving to Thayer Parkway. He found space to grow tomatoes and peppers and, at almost 90, was seen crawling around on his hands and knees to tend to them. He and Evelyn also took great joy in maintaining the flower beds at the Nazarene Church where they were regular attendees. He had a love of ice cream which could not be thwarted by either his wife or high sugar numbers. He made sure the deep freezer always was stocked with ice cream and his grandchildren counted on this as an after-dinner treat. Larry was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn, and children Karen Higgins, Neil E. Higgins, Sr., and Barbara (Higgins) Thompson. He was also predeceased by siblings Donald, John, Theodore, Miriam, Betty, Ruth, Carolyn, Clifford and Theresa. He is survived by his daughter, Jenny Mae Higgins, and her caregiver, Kathy Ryder, of Dexter, daughter, Susan (Higgins) Campbellton of Missouri, daughter, Denise Higgins of Virginia, stepdaughter, Tina (Clukey) Scarberry and husband, Mike, of Ohio, and stepdaughter, Cindy (Clukey) Hudson and husband, Steve, of Massachusetts. He is survived by 18 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren as well as siblings Marjorie, Alice, Myra, Francis and Arthur. Larry also leaves behind his close friends, Karen and Russell LaBlanc. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Hibbard Skilled Nursing Center for the exceptional care and love that they provided. They also would like to thank CHCS New Hope Hospice for providing comforting end of life care. A graveside service will be held at Gray Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft on Thursday, June 11 at 1:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Bob Herring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Larry’s memory to the Special Olympics of Maine, 125 John Roberts Road, Suite 5, South Portland, Maine 04106. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
