Dover-Foxcroft - Stephen “Steve” A. Howard passed away in Dover-Foxcroft, on June 8, 2020, due to complications from his heart and cancer. He was 79. His end of life came peacefully surrounded by family. Steve was born on April 8, 1941 at Mayo Memorial Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft to his parents George E. and Barbara Greenleaf Howard. Throughout his lifetime Steve always thought of others, regardless of where he was. First and foremost, he was there for his family, as they were the most important thing in the world to him. He had a memorable smile and sense of humor. He loved spending time fishing, hunting, and camping. Steve’s fly-fishing trips into Horseshoe Pond with the Clark family brought him great joy. He and his family spent spring, summer, and fall on Sebec Lake at the Howard family camp. The family had spent time at the camp for six generations. He could often be found on the front porch with shore folks and loved ones telling stories and drinking coffee. Steve graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1959, where he served as one of the class agents for the class. Following high school, he spent three years in the military and was stationed in Germany. Steve spent a year at Babson Junior College in Kansas. He later lived in Boston and worked as a bellhop. He loved telling stories of being a bellhop. Steve returned home in 1971 to Dover-Foxcroft to work at the family business, Geo E. Howard, Insurance. He will be remembered as the person that took great pleasure waiting on the older customers and they adored him. He was a member of the Jaycees, and then a 25-year member of the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club. Steve’s father was a founding member of Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club, and 50 years later, Steve served as their President. He and his wife were lifetime members of the Congregational Church, where he was a deacon and served coffee most Sunday mornings. He also was a member of the American Legion, Post 29. Steve loved looking forward to Thursday night Bingo. After his retirement, there was a pretty good chance you could find Steve at the American Legion Hall, drinking coffee at the Bear’s Den with his friends, or at Foxcroft Academy attending or keeping score at many sports events. Steve was predeceased by his parents George E. Howard and Barbara Greenleaf Howard, and brother-in-law, Malcolm Dow. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Linda Clark Howard; daughter, Kimber L. Hoyt and her fiancé, Richard N. Bilodeau; grandchildren, Ayla Mae Hoyt, Corbin JL. Bilodeau, and Gabrielle E. Bilodeau; sister, Georganne Howard Dow; brother, Jeffery E. Howard and his partner, Claire; and nieces and nephews, Roy, Timothy, Susanne, Kelly, Lainey, and George. The family would like to thank the Mayo Regional Hospital doctors, nurses, and staff for their kindness and medical care. A special thanks to Elizabeth Dennis, MD., Steve’s doctor and friend. A graveside memorial service will be held later in the summer with close family and friends at the family lot in Rural Grove Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft.
