Dear Teddy, Rich, Ben and Rob- We are so very sorry to hear of Bill’s death. He was such a kind and compassionate man and always willing to help when we all worked together at Mayo. We did have such fun watching our boys skate together on all those cold days playing outside in the D-F rink and all the others we travelled to over the years. We did not see a lot of him after his retirement, but periodically we would run into each other and have a catch up, he will be missed. Buster and Judy Gilbert

Teddy, I just learned of Bill's passing. I am so very sorry for his loss. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years in the OR. He taught me so much and he cared deeply for his patients. I loved his great laugh and wonderful sense of humor. Staff who didn't work with him thought he was gruff but I realized he was just a big teddy bear. He had such love for you and his sons and spoke of you all often. I will never forget the time we were called after hours and were told to go to the ER. There was a very bad trauma and Bill needed to intubate the young man. He was so calm and then went out of his way to speak to the parents with such kindness and empathy. I had great respect for Bill, he was truly special. My prayers are with you and your family. Sandy Thibodeau.

Teddy...I was so sorry to read of Bill’s passing. I met you both at Mayo as the new hospital was opening. Bill was such a kind and gentle man and always had a twinkle in his eye. And his laugh was a true REAL laugh! My favorite memory was when he was the anesthesiologist when I had minor surgery. As I was ‘going under’ he tried to make me promise free food in the cafeteria forever! He often would bring it up as he’d buy his lunch with a wink! May all the wonderful memories keep him close to you and yours as you navigate the days ahead. Judy Martin Johnston

Dear Teddy,
The only time I talked with Bill he excitedly shared how he was looking forward to an upcoming fishing trip. I believe that it was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said , "Every body has to have something to believe in. I believe I'll go fishing." Emerson would have liked Bill.
Because I feel deeply for your loss I would like to share some deeper thoughts to let you know you are in my prayers. There are instances when we want to shoulder the pain a friend is carrying, but we know that no man can. So we stand in the gap and think and pray that our concern will help them to bridge the span. When faced with a loss, one of the blessings of the human spirit is to bolster ourselves with remembrances of all the good times. It is natural and healing, and it is what is best. So I hope that you and your loved ones will revive with laughter that binds and set aside all of the rest. For the victories and triumphs you and Bill accomplished are timeless and stand as a monument in perpetuity to the heritage that you and your family have come to know as "The Ortons".

Oh Teddy, I am so sorry for your sudden loss of Bill. I am glad your boys and their wives are together with you......Sharing good memories with the wonderful family you and Bill raised.
Your mention of Bill’s fond memory of getting his first moose in 1980 triggered a memory of that moose. One evening while you were nursing at Mayo Hospital Bill called you on the phone. He told you the boys just gave the moose a haircut!
Loving you and your boys. Peg

I’m a new resident in the area and joined the Big Pine Gun Club. I went to the skeet event on the same Sunday I did my orientation of the club and he let me borrow his over-under. Bill gave me a bunch of pointers and basically set me on my way to enjoying the sport, which I know I will be playing long term. If he hadn’t let me borrow the gun or given me any pointers, I most likely wouldn’t have continued. I will always appreciate his welcoming nature and desire to teach others. Rest In Peace

My heart goes out to you Julie, and for your boys and extended family. Bill was "one of the good guys". I always enjoyed a conversation with Bill and remember him beaming when speaking of the boys as I watched them grow up through pictures. I most recently was so pleased to know that Bill was a Hospice volunteer and thought how wonderful a fit for the fortunate client to be paired with him. Will be keeping you all in my thoughts.

Bill and I started our service to Pine Tree Hospice together nearly at the same time. He as volunteer, myself as ED. While going through volunteer training together last fall we were often paired together. I enjoyed those conversations so much. We may have gotten into a few side conversations about hunting when we were supposed to be discussing the material. Bill was a wonderful volunteer and will be greatly missed by me.
