Greenville Jct. – Born August 9, 1946. Some say he was born in an old engine! His intrigue with anything mechanical lured him into his father’s machine shop at an early age. The fact that the machine shop was built by his grandfather in the early 1900’s with open sheaves, belts, and machines dating back to the 1800’s made it nearly impossible for Roger’s mother to bring him back out into the “real world”. He grew up tinkering with old vintage engines discarded for junk, many of which he brought back to life, much to the amazement of many. Besides growing up in the mechanical world, winters were spent working at local ski areas maintaining and running ski equipment, ski instructing, and ski patrolling. He was a “Senior” in the National Ski patrol for many years. After graduating from college, he fulfilled his obligation to the United States by serving in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. Years later, he sprouted wings and became a pilot. In 1981 he married Sue and together they moved to Maine in 1982 and founded Currier’s Flying Service at Moosehead Lake. His love of old machines and specializing in vintage aircraft made for a good combination, and he added many vintage planes to his fleet of commercially operated planes. As an F.A.A. licensed aircraft mechanic and inspector, he maintained his fleet mostly single-handedly. Roger’s passion in life in more recent years had become to make sure seaplane heritage is carried on in a meaningful way in the Moosehead Lake region, where once it was an integral part of life in northern Maine. Under his direction, Currier’s Aviation Museum has been created as a non-profit organization to preserve the rich history of seaplanes in the region, as well as boating, skiing, forest fire fighting in the area, all of which Roger was involved in, one way or another. God has called him home to serve as a flight instructor to the new generation of angels in heaven and aircraft mechanic to help God’s fleet! He leaves behind his beloved family, which includes Sue, his wife of nearly 40 years; his daughter, Jenny Kass and her husband, Ken Kass; his daughter, Sara Googins and her husband, Wayne Googins. He is predeceased by his mother, June Currier, father, Bill Currier, and a sister, Linda Horne.
