Obituary of Alfreda M. Cook
Milo - Alfreda Marin Cook departed this world on December 11, 2021, after a long illness. As she slipped peacefully away she was comforted by her loving husband of 65 years and two of her
children. She was 84.
Freda was born in Wallagrass, Maine, on October 28, 1937, the youngest of 18 children of
Thomas and Phoebe (Ouellette) Marin. She is survived by her husband, Everett Cook of Milo;
her sons, Richard (Margaret) Cook and Brian Cook; and her daughters, Lea VanTassel, Carolee
(Mike) White and Kimberly Cook. She is also survived by two sisters, Anne Belanger of Bristol,
CT and Alphena Curtis of Conway, NH. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 19 great-
grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She loved them all. Among her many qualities that
will be missed most is her angelic voice; she sang beautifully and that became a comfort to
everyone.
Her marriage to Everett Cook was an adventure! After raising five boisterous children, they
managed to travel extensively in the USA and beyond. They enjoyed Australia, Alaska, Hawaii,
and many more places from Maine to California.
Freda and Everett moved to Milo in 1973. She made many friends, shared hilarious stories, and
made everyone laugh. She loved Milo and the people; it became her home. She spent most of
her life working in the community. She was happiest when she was feeding someone! She
opened two restaurants in Milo, one of which featured a sassy sign over the kitchen door “Order
what you want, Eat what you get.” Continuing her mission of feeding people, Freda and Everett
began serving community Holiday Meals, starting with Thanksgiving then moving onto
Christmas. Anyone who needed or wanted to share their Holiday was welcome. Hundreds were
fed annually. Later, Freda and Everett opened their home as the Hitching Post Bed and
Breakfast. Hosting travellers from all around the world, those guests quickly became friends and
extended family.
Hibbards Skilled Nursing Facility in Dover Foxcroft, ME, welcomed her when it was time. She
was well cared for by the staff, especially Stephanie Washburn. The Beacon Hospice Team,
especially Erica, was equally important to her care. The Cook family is grateful for their care and
compassion towards their beloved Freda Cook.
A memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2022. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
