Brownville – William “Bill” Sawtell passed away on February 5, 2023, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born July 5, 1946, in Bangor, the son of William “Don” Sawtell and Constance Roberts Sawtell. Bill attended Farmington College, Laval University, and in 1971, he graduated from the University of Maine. Bill started his career in writing in the early eighties. He wrote over 50 books documenting local histories and biographies, as well as numerous articles covering local sporting events. Bill also tutored many local children. Bill loved his hometown of Brownville. Each year he looked forward to teaching local history to the children who were attending area schools. He was an active member of the Brownville Historical Society. In 2007, Bill’s contributions to the town were recognized when he was named Citizen of the Year. He loved playing scrabble, reading, writing, sports, and conversing with everyone he met. Bill is survived by his brother, Richard Sawtell; sister, Ruth Heath and husband, Michael; niece, Shelly Sawtell (Sean); nephews, Dickie Pelletier (Amanda), Stevie Heath (Gayle), and Mikie Heath (Jody); and many cousins, great nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by a nephew, Ronnie Sawtell. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the Brownville Community Church, where he attended since his youth, with Pastor Jack Williams officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in the Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville Junction.
