I well remember that when the Milo Community Hospital was in distress, Herbie and Helen were among the stalwarts who came to the hospital's rescue. That spirit was key to Herbie's dedication to the Milo Fire Department, the Masons and the Shrine. That spirit is what a small town needs to thrive and be a great place to live.
It is sad that so many of the folks that made our neighborhood at Schoodic Lake a special place have passed from the scene. What doesn't pass, thank God, are the wonderful memories provided by Herbie, Helen and the other folks who colonized our neighborhood beginning in 1960.
May such memories be a comfort to Herbie's family now and in the future.

I was so sorry to hear of Herbie's passing. He was a Milo icon and my neighbor "out ta camp" at Schoodic. I always enjoyed a chat with Herbie, as we agreed on a lot of things. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago, so it's hard for me to realize he is gone. My sincerest condolences to the family. Rest in peace Herbie. You will be missed.

Russell and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I know he will be greatly missed by family but also by the community. I hear so many stories of Herbie over the years that Tom was working the basketball games. I know I'm my heart that he isn't alone, he has some good company sitting in heaven with a hot cup of coffee and telling stories. I pray you find peace in knowing that God called home a good fireman.

I was very sorry to hear of Herbie's passing. While I didn't know him well, I will always remember him as the resident fireman at Penquis Valley. He was willing to be there when that presence was needed. My condolences to the family.

What a splendid and true tribute to a grand man! My Uncle Herbie was such a vital part of our Carey family and the Milo community and so many benefitted from his life with us. He was my 95 year old mother's baby brother and they shared many happy times for decades. She told me today about a new bike she bought him when she worked in CT during WWII. I remember seeing a photo of him standing with that bike in front of the farm, beaming with pride. I enjoyed many talks with Herbie and Helen, exploring for antiques, eating fresh corn at their Schoodic camp, trips to the coast for seafood, drives seeking moose to view. He cooked some delicious lasagna for me when I was last in Milo. The very last time I saw him on that visit, to say goodbye, he'd just gotten home from being on a late night-early morning fire call. Such a faithful citizen!! He imparted these qualities to his children by his example and also the value of a good education. What a priceless legacy he leaves for us all. My love to Russell, Michael, Vicki, and their children.
