Obituary of Herbert Russell Carey, Sr.
Milo - Herb Carey, "Herbie", passed away peacefully due to complications from a stroke, on July 24, 2017. Herbie was born on the Family Farm in Milo on August 6, 1928, to Elsie (Stackpole) and Arthur Carey, Sr. Herbie grew up on The Farm and it was here he acquired his "horse sense" for solving problems. He also learned a lifelong lesson of being a hard working and helpful citizen. Herbie graduated from Milo High School in the class of 1948. He was a gifted athlete in high school and made numerous all-star teams in baseball and basketball. In 1950, he married Helen (Doble) and they remained "Helen and Herbie" until her death in 2004.
Herbie worked as an engineer for the B&A Railroad for over 45 years. He was one of the last firemen to work on a steam locomotive. Herbie was a member of the Milo Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years. He was a Mason for over 50 years and a Shriner for 20 years. In retirement Herbie enjoyed working in his large vegetable garden, traveling with his wife, Helen, spending time at his camp on Schoodic Lake, and being around his buddies at the fire station. He loved his family gatherings for birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
He gave freely and generously of his time and energy to the people of Milo. If there was something that had to be done Herbie was there to see that it was done and done right. Herbie touched countless lives and was loved by many, many people. Even in death he will help others by being an organ donor to people suffering injuries caused by severe burns.
Herbie was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Elsie; his wife, Helen; daughter-in-law, Cindy; and his brothers, Alasco, Arthur, and Galen. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn and her daughter, Pam; his son, Russell and wife, Vikki; his son, Michael; and a special "daughter", Jean Stanchfield Bishop. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: granddaughter, Jessica Kinney and husband, Reid, and their children, Will, John, Miriam, Iris, George, and Pierce; granddaughter, Alyson Ade and husband, Bob, their children, Ainsley, Ashton, Beckham, Balack, and Aiya; grandsons, Ian Carey, and Justin Carey; granddaughter, Brittany Carey; and special "grandson", Skeezix . Herbie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and countless friends. Herbie died the way he lived his life, on his terms, and he will be missed by many.
A celebration of Herbie's remarkable life will be held on August 6, 2017. Friends and family can gather at his home at 9 Stoddard Street in Milo from 2 p.m. until people run out of stories to share. The next time you hear the siren of a fire truck, the whistle of a train's engine, or the laughter at a family gathering - please think of Herbie. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Milo. Condolences may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
