CERRITOS, CA – Dr. William Eben Gould, 86, husband of Sallie Adelle Drane-Bosch M.D., passed away August 28, 2020 at Lakewood Regional Medical Center, Lakewood, CA, after a short illness. He was born May 7, 1934, in Orange, New Jersey, the son of Eben Cassius and Margaret (Purple) Gould. Bill grew up in Maplewood, NJ, with his parents and older brother, Ansel, but enjoyed the many family trips to Maine, especially those to his grandfather Vernon Gould’s farm in Gorham, ME and the times he, his brother, and his father hiked the Maine mountains, in particular Mt. Katahdin. He earned his Eagle Scout badge from Troop 3 in Maplewood, and graduated from Columbia High School, South Orange, NJ, in 1952. He attended Rutgers University, NJ, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in 1956 and a M.S. in Mathematics in 1958. He continued his education at Princeton University, NJ, earning a M.A. in Mathematics in 1964, and a Ph.D. in 1966. Bill's passion was education and he taught mathematics at Washington College, MD, and at Bradley University, IL, before moving to the Los Angeles area in 1968. He spent the remainder of his long academic career in the Department of Mathematics at Cal State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA, retiring as a full professor in 1999. He continued to serve the University as an emeritus professor until 2015, teaching occasional classes and being active in the Academic Senate, including serving as Secretary of the Senate. He also anonymously funded a mathematics prize awarded annually at the University. Being a professor was the perfect career for Bill, as he loved to travel and took numerous trips during his summer breaks. After retirement he began traveling in earnest, and visited numerous states and countries including many European countries, Burma, India, Thailand, China, Russia, Egypt, and even Antarctica. One of his favorites was a combined trip to Machu Picchu in Peru and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. Although his teaching specialty was math, he was knowledgeable in many fields and conversations with him were full of fascinating tidbits he had picked up on his travels. This wonderful, generous and witty man loved spending time with his brother’s family. He spent almost every Christmas with them, and traveled with them on various occasions. His niece especially remembers taking an extended trip to Great Britain with Bill and her grandparents while in high school, and traveling to Prague and Norway with him and her parents in 1990. He took his grandnephew Kenny on trips to several National Parks in California and to the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Cortez, CO, where they participated in a dig researching the ancestral Pueblo societies of the Mesa Verde region. A particularly fun trip was a 10-day trip to Orlando, FL. Although he didn’t care for roller coasters or teacups, he did just about every other ride in Disney World and Universal Studios with his grandniece and grandnephews. He met his future wife, Adelle, on a trip to China. They found they had mutual interests in history, archaeology, culture, the arts, and nature, and traveled together for many years, including a special trip to Tanzania with Bill’s grandnephew Peter and Adelle’s grandson Adam. They made several trips to Crow Canyon for archaeological digs. Bill and Adelle married in Baltimore County, MD, on May 27, 2013, and Bill embraced his new family of Adelle's children and grandchildren. Bill is survived by his wife, Adelle, his niece, Deborah (Gould) Pederson and her husband Claud “Pete” of San Antonio, TX, and their children Peter, Kenneth, Matthew and Jennifer, and his nephew Robert Gould of Silver Spring, MD. He is also survived by his stepdaughters Julie Dechowitz, Jeannette Linder, M.D., and Joelle Elicker and their families, and stepsons Alan Bosch, Milton Bosch, M.D., and Paul Friedman and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepmother Jennie (Morrill) Gould, his brother Ansel Gould, and his sister-in-law Mary E. “Betty” (Decker) Gould. A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo, Maine. Bill will be interred in the Gould section of the cemetery.
